Ten PHS seniors nominated for the LaVern Roach Award

Ten Plainview High School senior boys have been nominated for the 2018 LaVern Roach Memorial Award, the most prestigious honor given to a PHS male graduating senior.
The award is named in honor of LaVern Roach, a 1943 PHS graduate and welterweight boxing champion who died from injuries received in the ring in 1950.
Roach’s widow, Evelyn Roach Trice, established the award in 1950 to promote clean living, good citizenship and sportsmanship.
Nominees are selected by vote of the senior class. The award recipient will be determined later this week by popular vote of the entire student body.
This year’s nominees are Jaylon Borrego, Benjamin Bozeman, John Patrick Ceniseros, Andres Garcia, Joseph Guy, Carson Hauk, Adrian Hinojosa, Jimmy Phan, Octavius Vera, and Edgar Zamarripa.
Jaylon Borrego, son of Janell Shannon and Alex Borrego, plans to attend Angelo State University to major in agribusiness. He participated in football, basketball and track at PHS. He also was a member of the NTHS (National Technical Honor Society) and the FFA.
Benjamin Bozeman, son of Kelley Bozeman and Heath Bozeman, plans to attend West Texas A & M University where he will major in environmental engineering with a minor in history. At PHS, he participated in tennis, band, and robotics. He was also a 4-H member and a Boy Scout.
Patrick Ceniseros, son of Rosalie Longoria and Oscar Longoria, plans to attend Texas A & M University, Corpus Christi, where he will major in marine biology. He played varsity tennis at PHS and participated in band, A Cappella choir, and DECA.
Andres Garcia, son of Eva and Gerardo Garcia, plans to attend Texas Tech University where he will major in computer engineering. At PHS he participated in band, National Honor Society and Snack Shak.
Joseph Guy, son of Felicia Guy, plans to attend West Texas A & M University where he will major in accounting. At PHS he played basketball all four years and football during his freshman year. He has participated in mission trips with the First United Methodist Church.
Carson Hauk, son of Darryl and Megan Lanning, plans to attend college and hopes to play basketball at the collegiate level. He has participated in football, basketball, and baseball during his years in high school. He attends Harvest Christian Church where he has participated in the youth program for many years.
Adrian Hinojosa, son of Ismael Hinojosa, is undecided about where he will attend college but plans to major in physical therapy. He played basketball at PHS. He also participated in a mission trip, helping to clean up debris following a tornado.
Jimmy Phan, son of Nhung Phan and Trong Phan, plans to attend Texas Christian University where he will major in pre-med, biology and chemistry. While at PHS, he was a varsity football player and a member of the National Honor Society. He also participated in youth groups at Plainview First Assembly and Harvest Christian Fellowship.
Octavius Vera, son of Jerry Vera and Gracie Vera, has not yet selected a university but hopes to pursue a degree in business or information technology and a possible career in powerlifting. While at PHS, he played football and was a member of the powerlifting team. He has also served on mission trips with the First United Methodist Church.
Edgar Zamarripa, son of Edgar and Elizabeth Zamarripa, plans to attend West Texas A & M University or Wayland Baptist University, where he will study accounting. While at PHS, he participated in football, baseball, cross country, and was a member of DECA.
