Debra Flournoy-Buford, Ph.D has 23 years of music teaching experience in Grades K-College. She holds a Philosophy of Fine Arts Degree from 2010 with fields of study in music, theatre, and art. She also has a Master’s degree in performance from Texas Tech with studies in composition, conducting, voice, and an emphasis in piano.

 Buford served on the faculty of Wayland Baptist University between 2003-2015 where she served in several roles as choral methods instructor, university supervisor, accompanist, four years as director of the jazz ensemble SPIRIT, Director of Wayland Singers Chorus and Artistic director of Children’s Chorus of Plainview. She also served as an elementary music specialist, Junior High Choral Director, High School Choral Director, and Quadrant Coordinator during her 11 years with Lubbock ISD.

 Buford continues to serve as a UIL Region and State adjudicator, choir clinician, and presenter for schools districts throughout the state.  She also serves as a conductor instructor for Level III Kodaly workshops.

Buford received an appointment from the State Board of Education in May 2011 to serve as an Expert Reviewer for committees writing revisions of the TEKS for music, theater, art, and dance.

She is also a performer and board member of the Ken Davis Chorale that performs in the Dallas-Fort Worth area twice a year.  The chorale recently performed at the Texas Choral Director’s Association in San Antonio in 2014 and performed at Texas Tech for a “coming home” concert in June of 2015.

Buford has had publications in the TMEC Connections Winter 2014 and Winter 2015 magazine entitled “A Personal Journey that leads to user-friendly research in a Title I Setting” and “Music Literacy Teaching Trends of the Inexperienced Adolescent Singer by Four Choral Directors of At-Risk Students.” She also had two articles published in the May 2013 TMEA Southwestern Magazine concerning “The New Normal in Texas School”  and “Succeeding in the New Normal.”

Buford has also served as the musical director for Lubbock Community Theaters’ performance of “Frog and Toad” and “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” in 2009 and 2011. Buford was appointed as the Music Theater Coordinator for Sidecar Theatre Company for two years which opened with the production of “The Civil War” in Lubbock, Texas, January 2013 and also served as the musical director for “Hairspray” in August of 2014.

 Buford serves in other volunteer roles such as accompanist for area church music programs and has been an instructor for the Lubbock Country Detention Center teaching Life Skills and sharing music with inmates

Buford is the wife of Deputy Joel Christopher Buford and the mother of a blended family of 4 daughters, 3 son-in-laws, 3 sons and 6 grandchildren.
