Patrick Ceniseros to receive LaVern Roach Award

Plainview High School senior Patrick Ceniseros was selected from 10 nominees as the 68th recipient of the LaVern Roach Award, the most prestigious recognition and the highest honor given to PHS male graduating seniors. 

The award memorializes world-renowned welterweight boxing champ LaVern Roach, a 1943 PHS graduate who died in 1950 from injuries received during a boxing match in New York City. Roach’s widow, Evelyn Roach Trice, established the award after his death to promote the lifestyle her husband embodied -- clean living, good citizenship and sportsmanship.

The ten nominees for the award were selected by a vote of the senior class. The recipient was determined by vote of the entire PHS student body.

Ceniseros’s name will be added to a plaque at PHS that bears the name of previous recipients. He will also be honored by the Plainview Lion’s Club, which administers the award.

Ceniseros, the son of Rosalie Longoria and Oscar Longoria, plans to attend Texas A & M University, Corpus Christi, where he will major in marine biology. He played varsity tennis at PHS and participated in band, A Cappella choir, and DECA. 

Nominees for the award, in addition to Ceniseros, were Jaylon Borrego, Benjamin Bozeman, Andres Garcia, Joseph Guy, Carson Hauk, Adrian Hinojosa, Jimmy Phan, Octavius Vera, and Edgar Zamarripa.
