PHS announces 2018 student honors

PHS senior Kristan Rincon was named 2018 class valedictorian and Lucy Hernandez was named class salutatorian at the 2018 Plainview High School Scholarship and Awards Assembly held on Monday evening. Who’s Who Awards, certificates of academic achievement, and scholarships recipients were also presented during the ceremony held in the PHS auditorium.

John Patrick Ceniseros was honored as recipient of the LaVern Roach Memorial Award.  The award, sponsored by the Plainview Lions Club, is the highest honor given to a PHS senior male student and is selected by popular vote of the student body. The award is named in honor of LaVern Roach, a 1943 PHS graduate and welterweight boxing champion who died in the ring in 1950. Roach’s widow, Evelyn Roach, established the award in 1950 to promote clean living, good citizenship and sportsmanship.

Trini Perez was recognized as recipient of the Nelda McQueen Laney Award. The award, also sponsored by the Plainview Lions Club, is the highest honor given to a PHS senior female student. It was established this year in memory of the “First Lady of West Texas” Nelda McQuien Laney and recognizes a senior girl who is in good standing at PHS, exhibits the traits of leadership and good citizenship, and is involved in student organizations at Plainview High School.

Recognized as LaVern Roach Award nominees were Jaylon Borrego, Benjamin Bozeman, Andres Garcia, Joseph Guy, Carson Hauk, Adrian Hinojosa, Tai Phan, Octavius Vera and Edgar Zamarripa.

Recognized as Nelda McQuien Laney Award nominees were Jaylee Campos, Anahi Cordero, Dareli Chavez, Lucy Hernandez, Bethany Gamez, Lauren Pritchard, Mahogany Nails, Yasmine Soto, and Tabbatha Riojas.

Who’s Who Award recipients, selected by their classroom teachers based upon academic excellence and classroom participation in various subjects, are:  Emily Franklin, mathematics; Lucy Hernandez, science; Brendan Cavazos, social studies; Isaac McMickings, English; and Lucy Hernandez, foreign language.

Plainview High School has 291 graduating seniors this year.  To be distinguished as an honor graduate, students must have maintained an overall grade point average of 5.0 or above. 95% of the graduating seniors have received acceptance letters from the armed forces, technical schools, college or universities. These students have also amassed $1,250,800 in scholarship money which includes $30,000 in local scholarship funds awarded during the evening events. Prior to the awards ceremony, local scholarship donors and recipients were honored with a reception.

The PHS Navy Junior ROTC color guards presented the flags. 

The PHS A Capella Select choir members led the audience in the school alma mater at the conclusion of the program. 

Floral arrangements decorating the stage were created by the PHS floral design class.
