Thunderbird Elementary principal, assistant principal announced

Thunderbird Elementary will be under a new campus leadership team for the 2018-2019 school year following the recent appointment of Karla Dunn as campus principal and Katrina Garrett as assistant principal.

Dunn, who served as Thunderbird’s assistant principal for the last three years, replaces former principal Amy Meek who moved to Canyon in March to accept a position with Canyon ISD.  Dunn has 18 years of experience in education. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Texas Tech University and a master’s degree in education administration from Lamar University.  Prior to joining Plainview ISD five years ago as a math and science teacher at Estacado Middle School, she taught for Levelland ISD, Bowie ISD and Whitharral ISD.

Garrett held the position of Plainview ISD’s elementary instructional services coordinator for the last five years.  Prior to that time, she was a fourth grade teacher at Thunderbird. Before joining the district eight years ago, she taught elementary school in Childress and in Lubbock.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Texas Tech University and a master’s degree in education with a principal certification from Wayland Baptist University.

Dunn is excited about the opportunity to step into the role of principal. “In the past several years, Thunderbird has made great strides in improving test scores, enhancing instruction, and focusing on student academic growth as a whole. It has been a privilege to be a part of the positive changes, and I am excited about the momentum that has been generated by our excellent staff and hard-working students. We plan to continue to provide excellent educational opportunities for our students here at Thunderbird. I believe the sky’s the limit for our campus as we move forward.” said Dunn.

For Garrett, her new position is a homecoming.  “I am very excited to be going back to my home campus with staff and students that I deeply care about. Thunderbird has an incredible family atmosphere that I can’t wait to be a part of again.”
